The Global Chess League 2025 saw a major shift in momentum in Mumbai as defending titleholders Triveni Continental Kings climbed to the top of the standings at the halfway mark of the double round-robin stage, played at the Royal Opera House.
Star player Alireza Firouzja extended his flawless run by registering his fifth consecutive victory, defeating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the decisive encounter. His win proved to be the difference as the Continental Kings edged the upGrad Mumba Masters 9–5 to move clear at the top.
While most games between the star-studded sides finished in draws, Firouzja’s composure and precision under pressure ensured his team maintained their title defence with authority.
Elsewhere, the PBG Alaskan Knights broke their winless streak with a commanding 12–8 win over the Alpine SG Pipers, thanks to notable wins from young Indian grandmasters D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi.
The Ganges Grandmasters kept themselves in contention with a narrow 8–7 victory over the Fyers American Gambits, closing the gap to the leaders and intensifying the race for the final spots.
As the tournament enters its second half, the contest for the top two positions—and a berth in the final—is heating up, with elite players and tactical matchups shaping a thrilling finish to this unique global franchise league.
