Dubious Hat-Trick: India Tops Global Doping List for Third Consecutive Year

India has emerged as the world’s leading doping offender for the third consecutive year, according to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) latest report, marking a worrying trend in the country’s sporting landscape.

The report, published on December 16, 2025, revealed that India’s National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) collected 7,113 urine and blood samples in 2024, with 260 testing positive. Among major sporting nations, India recorded the highest positivity rate.

Athletics, Weightlifting, Wrestling Lead Cases
Athletics accounted for the most violations, with 76 cases, followed by weightlifting (43) and wrestling (29). Notably, under-23 wrestling champion and Paris Olympics quarter-finalist Reetika Hooda was provisionally suspended in July after testing positive. The recent University Games highlighted the widespread fear of anti-doping officials, with reports suggesting very few athletes participated in some track and field events.

Global Context
France ranked second globally with 91 positive cases, followed by Italy (85), Russia and the United States (76 each), Germany (54), and China (43). India had previously topped the doping list in 2022 and 2023.

NADA’s Response
NADA defended its efforts, citing strengthened testing and increased education and awareness programs. “In recent years, India has witnessed a significant strengthening of its anti-doping framework,” the agency said. As of December 16, 2025, NADA had conducted 7,068 tests with 110 positive results.

International Concerns
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has repeatedly raised alarms over India’s doping record. In response, the Indian Olympic Association formed a new anti-doping panel, and the government passed a national anti-doping bill to expand testing and enforce stricter compliance, aiming to safeguard the integrity of Indian sports.

As India gears up to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games—a potential stepping stone to the 2036 Olympics—these figures underline the urgent need for reform to restore global confidence in its athletes.
