At just 28, Abby Dow, one of the most electrifying and decorated players in women’s rugby, has announced her retirement from professional rugby, bringing to a close a glittering eight-year international career. The Rugby Football Union confirmed that Dow will step away from the sport to pursue her engineering career.
Since making her England debut in 2017, Dow has earned 59 test caps and scored 50 tries, establishing herself as one of the most prolific finishers in Red Roses history. Her accolades include seven Six Nations titles—six of them Grand Slams—and the crowning achievement of the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup victory on home soil.
Dow’s career has been defined by her breathtaking pace, creative flair, and a knack for scoring in crunch moments. Her final international appearance fittingly came in the World Cup final against Canada at Allianz Stadium, where England lifted the trophy before a record-breaking crowd of 81,885. Across her career, she dazzled fans and defenders alike, leaving an indelible mark on England rugby.
Reflecting on her journey, Dow said, “I never realised when I picked up a rugby ball at the age of five that I was at the start of a 23-year sporting career… Rugby has been central to my life and has shaped me into who I am today. However, I feel the pull of my other passion – engineering – so I have decided to hang up my boots and try my luck in a different world.”
Her Six Nations story is packed with unforgettable moments, including a try-scoring double on debut against Canada in 2017 and her 50th cap against Ireland earlier this year. Off the pitch, Dow balanced elite sport with academic excellence, earning a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. She also became beloved for her crochet creations, crafting everything from scrunchies to bespoke gifts for teammates—and even The Princess of Wales.
Red Roses head coach John Mitchell praised Dow as “an awesome individual and a fierce competitor who lifts those around her… I personally believe that we are losing arguably the best right winger in world rugby at the peak of her powers.”
Abby Dow’s retirement marks the end of an era for England and the Six Nations, but her legacy—both on and off the field—will continue to inspire generations of players to come.
