Former Chelsea and Brazil midfielder Oscar has been released from hospital after experiencing a heart-related episode last week. The 34-year-old fell ill during routine physical testing at Sao Paulo’s training centre on Tuesday as the squad prepared for the upcoming season.
Medical diagnosis confirmed
Sao Paulo said Oscar was discharged from Einstein Hospital Israelita on Sunday and remained “stable and clinically well” during his stay. Doctors carried out a full set of tests and confirmed that the midfielder suffered an episode of vasovagal syncope — a common fainting spell caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate.
The club added that Oscar will take a few days of medical rest before gradually returning to training.
Oscar’s journey back to Sao Paulo
The midfielder began his professional career at Sao Paulo before rising to prominence in Europe. He scored 38 goals in 203 appearances for Chelsea between 2012 and 2016, winning the Premier League and Europa League.
Oscar returned to Sao Paulo last year on a three-year deal running until 2027, following eight seasons in China.
