Kolkata’s Eden Gardens witnessed a tense first innings for India against South Africa, finishing at a modest 189, overshadowed by the early exit of captain Shubman Gill, who retired hurt after facing just a few deliveries.
India began the day with promise, resuming at 37/1. However, Gill’s sudden discomfort after playing a boundary shot left the team without their skipper at a crucial stage. Clutching his neck, he walked off, sparking concern over his fitness for the rest of the match.
Amid the struggle, KL Rahul top-scored with 39 runs, marking a significant milestone by crossing 4,000 Test runs. Adding to the historic moment, Ravindra Jadeja also joined the elite club of Indian batsmen with 4,000 Test runs, contributing 27 in a fighting but ultimately restrained innings.
Other contributions included Washington Sundar – 29, Rishabh Pant – 27, Yashasvi Jaiswal – 12, Axar Patel – 15
The middle and lower order tried to stabilize the innings, but regular wickets prevented any significant partnerships. India’s total of 189 leaves them 30 runs ahead of South Africa, who had been bowled out for 159 in their first innings.
Gill’s injury, combined with the team’s inability to build substantial partnerships, means India must rely on resilience and strategy in the upcoming session. Yet, Rahul’s and Jadeja’s milestones provide a silver lining in an otherwise fragile innings, highlighting individual brilliance amid collective struggle.
