Bhubaneswar: England boss Gareth Southgate has made two late additions to his squad ahead of the final 2026 World Cup qualifying fixtures, with Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford earning surprise call-ups. The pair step in after injuries ruled out Newcastle United’s Nick Pope and winger Anthony Gordon.
Chalobah, 26, returns to the England fold after a strong run of form for Chelsea, impressing with his calm defensive displays and versatility across the back line. For Trafford, just 22, the call represents a career milestone—his first senior inclusion after standing out for the England Under-21s during their European Championship triumph last year.
Southgate praised the duo’s inclusion, calling them “hungry and ready to seize their chance.” He added, “Both Trevoh and James have been on our radar for some time. With the injuries we’ve had, this is a great opportunity for them to integrate into the senior setup.”
The England manager has been forced to shuffle his pack, with Gordon sidelined by a hip injury and Pope still recovering from concussion protocols. “It’s never ideal losing players of that quality,” Southgate admitted, “but it opens doors for others to step up.”
For Chalobah, this call-up caps a remarkable resurgence. After a season hampered by injuries, he’s regained his rhythm under Chelsea’s new system, showing leadership and composure in key Premier League clashes. “It’s an honour every time you represent your country,” Chalobah said in a short club interview. “I’ve worked hard to be ready for moments like this.”
Meanwhile, Trafford’s rise continues an inspiring journey from League One to the England camp in just over two years. The former Manchester City academy product, known for his sharp reflexes and maturity, has been one of Burnley’s bright spots this season. “It’s a proud day for me and my family,” Trafford said. “To get the call from England is something every kid dreams about.”
England have already sealed qualification for the 2026 World Cup, but these final qualifiers—against Serbia and Albania—still carry significance. Southgate is expected to test fresh combinations and assess his squad depth ahead of next summer’s tournament.
For Chalobah and Trafford, the message is clear: opportunity knocks, and the world will be watching.
