Ace Indian para shuttler Pramod Bhagat continued his golden run, clinching three titles at the 1st Abia Para Badminton International held in Abia, Nigeria, from September 30 to October 5.
Singles success in hard-fought final
The 37-year-old, who had earlier won gold at the Tokyo Paralympics but missed the Paris Games due to whereabouts failures, captured the men’s singles SL3 crown with a 21-7, 9-21, 21-9 victory over compatriot Mantu Kumar.
Returning after an 18-month ban, Bhagat displayed composure and tactical brilliance to recover strongly after losing the second game.
Dominance in doubles and mixed doubles
Bhagat then teamed up with Sukant Kadam to win the men’s doubles gold, defeating Peru’s Gerson Jair Vargas Lostaunaul and Diana Rojas Golac 21-13, 21-17.
He later added a third gold in mixed doubles (SL3-SU5), partnering Arati Patil to seal another close final, completing a commanding performance in the tournament.
Teammates add to India’s medal tally
Ranjit Singh secured three bronze medals—in men’s singles WH1, men’s doubles WH1-WH2 (with Paramjit Singh), and mixed doubles WH1-WH2 (with Shabana).
Nurul Hossain Khan bagged silver in men’s singles WH2, while Uma Sarkar took silver in women’s singles SL3 and a bronze in women’s doubles with Arati Patil.
India’s strong showing continues
India dominated across categories, with Nilesh Gaikwad and Kanak Singh Jadaun winning bronze in SL4 events, and a clean sweep in men’s singles SU5 through Karan Paneer, Rahul Vimal, and Sativada.
