Team India talisman Shubman Gill has been named as the new ODI captain. Gill, who is India’s Test skipper and also the vice-captain of the T20I side, will take over the reins from Rohit Sharma for the forthcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain.

Interestingly, this will be Gill’s first series as captain of the ODI side. The change in captaincy has been made with an eye on the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.

On Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the three-match ODI series set to start this month from 19th onwards.

Rohit, Kohli named in India’s ODI squad

Despite Rohit being replaced as captain, he has been named in the ODI squad. Rohit makes a return to the Indian setup alongside fellow star Virat Kohli. The duo haven’t played for India since the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in March, this year.

Here’s the India ODI squad: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vc), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Rohit owns best win percentage as Indian skipper (Min 50 games)

Rohit managed the 8th-highest number of matches as Team India skipper in ODIs, as per ESPNcricinfo.

He led the ODI team across 56 matches. During his captaincy, India won 42 games and lost 12. One match was tied and one game didn’t have a result.

His win percentage of 75 is the best among Indian captains to have led in ODIs for 50-plus matches. The next best is Virat Kohli, whose win percentage was 68.42%. Kohli managed India in 95 ODI games.

Rohit’s batting stats as ODI skipper

In 56 matches as India’s ODI skipper, Rohit scored a tally of 2506 runs at an average of 52.20. He hammered 5 hundreds and 17 fifties. He hit 251 fours and 126 sixes as captain. His best effort was an unbeaten 208.

Overall in ODIs, Rohit owns 11168 runs from 273 matches at 48.76. He has 32 tons and 58 fifties. The Hitman is six shy of 350 sixes (344). He has hit 1045 fours as well. He is the 4th-highest scorer for India in ODIs.

Major achievements as India’s ODI skipper

Rohit helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with the side defeating New Zealand in the final.

The veteran player also helped India reach the ICC World Cup 2023 final. They ended as runners-up in the hands of Australia.

Rohit also helped India win the 2023 Asia Cup title. India defeated Sri Lanka in the final.
