GOA- FIDE has announced the wildcard entries for the FIDE World Cup in Goa, scheduled to run from October 30 to November 27. The biennial event will feature 206 of the world’s top chess players, including a strong contingent of 21 Indian players, spearheaded by reigning World Champion D. Gukesh.
The Wildcard Entries
A diverse group of talented players from around the world has received a wildcard entry for the prestigious event. The list includes a mix of established grandmasters, rising stars, and young prodigies.
- Divya Deshmukh (India): The 19-year-old reigning FIDE Women’s World Cup champion secured a wildcard after an impressive performance at the FIDE Grand Swiss tournament.
- Abhimanyu Mishra (USA): At 16, Mishra holds the record as the youngest player in history to achieve the Grandmaster title.
- Andy Woodward (USA): The reigning US Junior Closed Champion received a wildcard invitation.
- Volodar Murzin (Russia): A formidable force in quick chess, Murzin is the current World Rapid Champion.
- Kirill Alekseenko (Russia, representing Austria): A seasoned Grandmaster who has competed at the highest levels of the sport.
- Faustino Oro (Argentina): Known as the “Messi of Chess,” the 11-year-old prodigy is the youngest player to ever receive a wildcard entry to the World Cup.Event Details and Significance
The FIDE World Cup is a knock-out tournament that puts players through a series of mini-matches, testing their nerves and skill. Beyond the prize money, the stakes are exceptionally high, as the top three finishers will earn a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament. The Candidates tournament determines the challenger who will face the reigning World Champion for the world title.
This year’s event is particularly special as it’s being hosted in India and is headlined by the current World Champion, D. Gukesh, making it a momentous occasion for Indian chess.
