Bhubaneswar: At the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Aleksandr Komarov of Serbia edged out Iran’s Alireza Mohamadi 4-3 in a gripping 87kg Greco-Roman final, making history as the first male wrestler to complete the Grand Slam of world titles. Komarov’s win spoiled Iran’s bid for another gold, despite their dominant performance earlier in the tournament.
Mohamadi, a former world and Olympic silver medalist, fought hard but was narrowly defeated by Komarov’s tactical prowess, including a decisive par terre move and a crucial referee call. Komarov reflected, “I believed in my experience and kept pushing till the very end.”
Iran still shone through other stars like Saeid Esmaeili, who claimed gold in the 67kg category, and Mohammadmehdi Keshtkar, who won bronze at 63kg. Iran also secured the overall team title with 180 points.
This final bout was the climax of a championship filled with fierce contests and historic moments, with Komarov’s breakthrough win spotlighting the drama and skill at the heart of world-class Greco-Roman wrestling.
