New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued its first official response to the ongoing debate surrounding the absence of a post-match handshake between India and Pakistan players after their recent Asia Cup encounter.
Background To The Controversy
Following India’s emphatic win over Pakistan, the customary gesture of a handshake did not take place. The incident drew attention after Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed disappointment, suggesting the moment went against the spirit of the game.
BCCI’s Response
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the issue, urging the cricketing community to shift focus back to India’s performance rather than peripheral controversies. “India defeated Pakistan in a very handsome manner. We should be proud of the team’s display and concentrate on the positives,” he said.
Players And Leadership On The Same Page
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav also weighed in, revealing that the team’s decision not to engage in the handshake was in alignment with both the BCCI and the government’s stance. “We wanted to just play our game and give a proper reply on the field,” Yadav said, reinforcing that the call was a collective one.
Focus On Upcoming Matches
Looking ahead, India is set to face Oman in their final Group A match on September 19 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. With momentum on their side, the team is aiming to carry forward its winning spirit and secure a strong position in the tournament.
