Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Indian chess talent Nihal Sarin has demonstrated remarkable form at the Chess event of the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, securing his spot in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Sarin’s impressive performance in the lower bracket ensures strong Indian representation in the final stages of the prestigious tournament.
Sarin’s Resilient Path Through the Lower Bracket
Playing for S8UL Esports, Nihal Sarin had a dominant run on Wednesday, securing back-to-back victories. He first showcased his skill by defeating the Netherlands’ Anish Giri with a clean 2-0 sweep. Sarin then faced France’s formidable Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in a crucial lower bracket clash.
In a display of strategic precision, Sarin held Vachier-Lagrave to a draw with the black pieces in the first game. He then seized the initiative in the second game, clinching a vital win with white pieces to secure his progression with a 1.5-0.5 score.
All games in the tournament are played under a rapid time control of 10 minutes with no increment, with each fixture being a two-game match that could lead to an armageddon tiebreak if needed.
Indian Dominance and Star-Studded Quarterfinals
Sarin now joins fellow Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in the last-eight stage of the 16-player event, which boasts a substantial prize money of USD 1.5 million. Erigaisi had already secured his quarterfinal berth on Tuesday as a group winner, alongside other chess titans such as Levon Aronian, Alireza Firouzja, and reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen. The presence of two Indian players in the quarterfinals underscores the nation’s growing prowess in competitive chess.
