Lionel Messi made an instant impact on his return to action as Inter Miami edged past Atlas 2-1 in their Leagues Cup opener at the Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The Argentine maestro, back from a one-match ban for skipping the MLS All-Star Game, registered two assists — including the decisive one deep into stoppage time — to inspire the Herons to victory.
Late drama unfolds as Messi and Weigandt seal the win
After a goalless first half, Messi set up Telasco Segovia in the 58th minute to hand Inter Miami the lead. Atlas, however, responded through Rivaldo Lozano, who equalised in the 82nd minute. Just when the match seemed destined for a draw, Messi combined with Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez to create space for Marcelo Weigandt, who slotted home the winner in the 96th minute.
Weigandt’s goal was initially ruled offside but was awarded after a VAR review — capping a dramatic finish that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
Strong return for Messi amid team reshuffle
Messi’s brace of assists pushed his tally to five in July, a month in which he also scored eight goals and was named Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month. His link-up play with new signing Rodrigo De Paul, who made his Inter Miami debut, added an extra spark to the midfield. De Paul became the latest Argentina teammate to reunite with Messi at the club, joining Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.
Inter Miami had drawn their previous game 0-0 against FC Cincinnati, where Messi was absent due to suspension. With the win over Atlas, the side bounced back in style, showcasing their attacking intent once again.
Goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo made three crucial saves in the first half, while Suárez came close to scoring just before the break, rattling the crossbar. The match was physical and intense, with both sides having their moments before Messi’s genius settled it in stoppage time.
