Hyderabad : A tragic incident unfolded on a Tuesday evening at the Professor Jayashankar Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad’s Lalapet area, where 38-year-old Shyam Yadav suddenly collapsed and died while playing badminton. Shyam, a passionate sports enthusiast who regularly played badminton and cricket after work, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during the game. Despite immediate efforts by friends and onlookers to revive him and rapid transportation to Gandhi Hospital, he was declared brought dead upon arrival.
The episode was captured on CCTV installed in the stadium, showing Shyam lying motionless on the court with several people checking his breathing. Reports suggest that if urgent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) had been administered promptly at the scene, his life might have been saved. Shyam hailed from the Malkajgiri suburb of Hyderabad and was employed in the private sector.
This unfortunate death is part of a worrying trend in Telangana, where this marks the seventh sudden cardiac death incident within the past two weeks. Such cases include not only athletes but also individuals collapsing suddenly during other physical activities and even celebrations, highlighting an alarming public health concern. The exact causes remain under investigation, but cardiac arrest is strongly suspected based on patterns observed in recent similar cases.
This incident underscores the critical need for greater awareness on cardiac emergencies and the availability of life-saving interventions like CPR in sports and public venues to prevent further loss of life among seemingly healthy young adults.
