Why Ishan Kishan Had to Reject BCCI Offer to Replace Injured Rishabh Pant in England

Manchester, UK – The Indian cricket team’s injury woes in England have deepened, with promising wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan being forced to decline an offer from the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to join the Test squad. This development comes after news broke that Rishabh Pant, the primary wicketkeeper-batter, has been effectively ruled out of the remainder of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy due to a toe fracture sustained during the 4th Test.

Rishabh Pant’s Injury Update:

  • Incident: Pant suffered a mild compound fracture in his right foot after being hit by a Chris Woakes delivery on Day 1 of the 4th Test at Old Trafford (Wednesday, July 23, 2025). He had to retire hurt but bravely returned to bat on Day 2.
  • Status for 4th Test: The BCCI has confirmed he will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the 4th Test, with Dhruv Jurel taking over the gloves.
  • Outlook for Series: Initial reports indicate Pant is likely ruled out for the remainder of the series (including the 5th Test at The Oval) and will require at least six to eight weeks of rest and rehabilitation. He was seen wearing a protective orthopedic “moon boot” on Day 2.

Ishan Kishan: The First Choice Replacement:

  • Selectors’ Move: As soon as Pant’s severe injury became apparent and his potential exclusion from the series was confirmed, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee promptly contacted Ishan Kishan.
  • Reason for Selection: Kishan, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, was considered a like-for-like replacement for Pant’s dynamic batting style. He had also recently showcased good form, scoring 87 and 77 for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, which likely played a role in him being the selectors’ top pick.

The Bizarre Reason for Kishan’s Rejection:

  • Ankle Injury: Despite the opportunity, Ishan Kishan had to “firmly say no” to the BCCI’s offer. The reason for his unavailability is a bizarre ankle injury.
  • Scooty Accident: According to a report in The Times of India, Kishan sustained the injury after falling from a scooty.
  • Medical Details: The injury was severe enough to require ten stitches on his left ankle. While his stitches have since been removed, he currently has a plaster on his left ankle, rendering him unfit to travel to England or participate in immediate competitive cricket.
  • Rehabilitation: Kishan is expected to begin his rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

N Jagadeesan Set to Replace Pant:

  • Next in Line: With Ishan Kishan unavailable due to his unexpected injury, the selection committee has reportedly turned its attention to N Jagadeesan.
  • Profile: Jagadeesan, a 29-year-old right-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Tamil Nadu, boasts significant first-class experience.
    • He has played 52 first-class matches.
    • Accumulated 3373 runs at an impressive average of 47.50.
    • Recorded 10 centuries and 14 fifties.
    • Behind the stumps, he has secured 133 catches and effected 14 stumpings.
  • Arrival in England: Reports suggest that Jagadeesan is “almost certain” to join the squad and is expected to link up with the team ahead of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which is scheduled to begin on July 31, 2025, at The Oval in London.

The unfortunate turn of events with both Pant and Kishan highlights India’s deepening injury crisis in a crucial Test series where they are currently trailing England 1-2.
