Bhubaneswar : The much-anticipated face-off between Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, scheduled for August 16, 2025, at the Silesia Diamond League in Poland, now faces uncertainty. The highly awaited rematch comes nearly a year after their epic duel at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Nadeem claimed gold with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m, edging out Chopra who took silver with 89.45m. This meet was expected to be their first competition head-to-head since that thrilling final, with organizers confirming the event as a major highlight.
However, Nadeem recently underwent calf muscle surgery in England and is currently in rehabilitation, making his participation doubtful. His coach, Salman Butt, stated that Nadeem is prioritizing a full recovery and preparing for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September, the next major global event after the Diamond League meets. Owing to this focus, the coach indicated that the face-off between Chopra and Nadeem might not materialize in Poland or in the subsequent Diamond League event in Switzerland, with a return possible only post recovery and medical clearance. Chopra, meanwhile, has had a strong 2025 season and is expected to compete, but the eagerly awaited Indo-Pak javelin rivalry will likely have to wait until Nadeem’s comeback.
This situation reflects a balancing act between athlete health and competitive anticipation, with the athletics world keenly awaiting their eventual contest.
