Iowa, USA – June 29, 2025: Sixteen-year-old Indian badminton prodigy Tanvi Sharma has scripted history by becoming the youngest Indian ever to reach the singles final of a BWF World Tour event abroad. The unseeded teenager stormed into the final of the US Open Super 300 tournament in Iowa with a series of stunning performances against higher-ranked opponents.

In the semi-final, Tanvi produced a dominant display to defeat Ukraine’s seventh seed Polina Buhrova in straight games, 21-14, 21-16. The match lasted just 34 minutes and showcased her remarkable blend of speed, aggression, and tactical discipline. This was her second consecutive victory over Buhrova, further proving her growing confidence on the international stage.

Tanvi’s path to the final has been extraordinary. Earlier in the tournament, she dispatched Malaysia’s Karupathevan Letshanaa 21-13, 21-16 in the quarter-finals and overcame several seasoned players in earlier rounds. Despite her young age, she has demonstrated the composure and resilience of an experienced campaigner.

Standing between Tanvi and her first career title is the formidable top seed Beiwen Zhang of the United States, a vastly experienced player known for her relentless pace and variety of strokes. The final promises to be a stern test of Tanvi’s skills and temperament.

It wasn’t just Tanvi who lit up the Iowa courts. India’s Ayush Shetty also delivered a memorable performance in the men’s singles semi-final. The fourth seed stunned world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in a gripping three-game battle, eventually prevailing 21-23, 21-15, 21-14. He will now face Canada’s Brian Yang in the championship clash.

Tanvi Sharma, born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, has been hailed as one of the most promising talents in Indian badminton. She trains under renowned coach Park Tae-sang and has already been part of India’s Uber Cup squad and the team that won the gold medal at the 2024 Asia Team Championships.

Her breakthrough run in Iowa is being celebrated as a sign of India’s growing depth in women’s singles badminton. At just 16 years old, she has proven she can compete and triumph against some of the world’s best. If she manages to win the title, it will be India’s first-ever women’s singles crown at the US Open and a defining moment in her young career.

With her fearless style and big-match temperament, Tanvi Sharma is inspiring a new generation of shuttlers back home. Regardless of the result in the final, she has already announced herself as a rising star on the world stage.
