Athletics Spotlight: Karnataka Athletes Shine Bright at IOAM Bengaluru
Karnataka’s athletes delivered an inspiring show of strength and skill at the Indian Open Athletics Meet (IOAM) held at Bengaluru’s iconic Kanteerava Stadium. The state’s contingent not only secured several podium finishes but also demonstrated the depth of talent emerging across disciplines.
Among the standout performers, Ambika V produced a commanding throw of 14.14 metres in the women’s shot put to clinch the gold medal. Her powerful effort underlined her consistency and determination to dominate the event. In the 400m sprint, Vijayakumari GK emerged victorious with a time of 53.34 seconds, showcasing her smooth acceleration and disciplined race strategy that left her rivals trailing.
The meet also featured big names on the national circuit, with Tejaswin Shankar and Tajinderpal Singh Toor drawing attention. While Toor reinforced his reputation as one of India’s finest shot putters, Shankar demonstrated his impressive versatility across events, continuing to be a role model for aspiring multi-event athletes.
Karnataka’s sprinters put up a spirited display in the women’s 100m dash, where V Sudheeksha, Daneshwari AT, and Sneha kept pace with Telangana’s Nithya Gandhe. Their performances hinted at exciting rivalries building up for the future, as more young athletes challenge the established stars.
Beyond the medals, the meet also reflected Karnataka’s growing emphasis on grassroots sports development. Initiatives led by the Centre for Sports Science at Kanteerava Stadium have expanded talent identification programs into rural and tribal communities, including among the Siddi population. These programs combine scientific assessments with systematic coaching, offering promising youngsters a pathway to competitive athletics.
Overall, Karnataka athletes secured a haul of top-three finishes that underscored both individual excellence and the state’s commitment to nurturing athletics. Performers like Ambika and Vijayakumari have become symbols of what dedicated support structures and relentless training can achieve. As the season progresses, Karnataka’s athletics fraternity will look to build on this momentum and continue asserting itself on the national stage.
