Five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek put on a dominant display at the Bad Homburg Open on Friday, crushing second seed Jasmine Paolini 6-1, 6-3 to reach the final! Swiatek is now just one win away from claiming her first-ever career title on grass, a perfect tune-up as Wimbledon starts next week.
A Masterclass on Grass
The former world No. 1 showed she’s well and truly on track for success on the grass courts. She outclassed Paolini, last year’s Wimbledon finalist, with ease. The Pole, who boasts four French Open titles and one US Open, had opted for a week of training in Mallorca instead of playing other grass tournaments this season before competing in Bad Homburg, a strategy that seems to be paying off.
Swiatek was in complete control from the start of the match. She was never troubled by the Italian in the first set, racing through it in just 29 minutes thanks to three crucial breaks of serve. While the pair traded breaks at the start of the second set, Paolini continued to struggle to hold her serve and contain the aggressive Pole, who quickly went up 4-2. Swiatek sealed her victory with a forehand winner on her third match point.
Pegula Fights Through for All-American Final
Swiatek will now face American top seed Jessica Pegula in what promises to be an exciting final. Pegula had a much tougher path, having to dig deep to beat Czech Linda Noskova 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-1 in a match that lasted just over two hours.
Noskova truly had Pegula on the ropes, winning the first set and even leading 5-4 in the second. However, the resilient American managed to compose herself, improved her returns, and ultimately completed her comeback on her third match point. It sets up a thrilling showdown between two of the game’s top players for the Bad Homburg Open title!
