All Eyes on Ronaldo and Yamal as Portugal Face Spain in Nations League Final

Portugal, the winners of the inaugural Nations League in 2019, are set to take on the defending champions Spain in what promises to be one of the most exciting international finals in recent memory. Not only is this a showdown between Iberian giants, but it’s also a clash of two generational stars—Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal—who have been instrumental in leading their sides to Sunday’s final in Munich.

How did Portugal reach the Nations League final?

Portugal secured their spot in the final by defeating tournament hosts Germany 2-1 in the first semifinal. Germany took the lead early in the second half through Florian Wirtz, but Francisco Conceicao equalized soon after. Cristiano Ronaldo then delivered the winner just five minutes later, showing once again why he remains a force at 40.

How did Spain fare in their semifinal against France?

Spain’s semifinal against France turned into a historic classic. In a high-scoring thriller, Spain emerged victorious 5-4 after nearly squandering a 4-0 and 5-1 lead. Lamine Yamal stole the show with two goals, outshining France’s star trio of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue—fresh off their Champions League win with PSG.

How important is the UEFA Nations League final?

Though not as prestigious as the World Cup or Euros, the Nations League has become a valuable competitive platform for European nations, replacing meaningless friendlies with high-stakes matches. The final is seen as vital preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the quality of the semifinals has only added to the tournament’s credibility and anticipation.

Yamal acknowledged the weight of the final—and the chance to face one of the game’s greats—saying, “Playing against Cristiano? He’s a football legend. I’ll do my job, which is to win the game, and that’s it.”

Is this Lamine Yamal’s moment to shine?

With all eyes on Munich, much of the attention is focused on 17-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. Despite his youth, Yamal has already dazzled fans at both club and international levels. He helped Barcelona secure a domestic treble this season and was pivotal in Spain’s Euro 2024 win last summer.

Now, as he steps onto the pitch alongside Ronaldo—one of the sport’s all-time greats—Yamal has the opportunity to prove he’s ready to inherit the global spotlight.

Is Yamal in the running for the Ballon d’Or?

The rise of young stars like Yamal and PSG’s Desire Doue has sparked speculation about the next Ballon d’Or winner. With Messi and Ronaldo nearing the end of their careers, players like Yamal, Vinicius Jr., Mbappe, and Dembele are leading the new generation.

Spain’s Rodri is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or, but Yamal’s performance in Sunday’s final could significantly boost his chances ahead of the September awards.

What happened the last time Portugal played Spain?

The last meeting between the two nations came in a 2022 Nations League group stage game, where Spain snatched a 1-0 win in Portugal thanks to a late Alvaro Morata goal.

Head-to-head – Portugal vs Spain

Spain and Portugal first faced off in 1921, with Spain winning 2-1. Since then, Spain has dominated the rivalry, winning 17 of the 34 matches. Portugal has managed only six wins, with the most recent coming in 2010. Notably, six of the last seven encounters have ended in draws, highlighting how closely matched these teams often are.

Who did Spain beat in the 2023 Nations final?

Spain claimed the 2023 Nations League title by defeating Croatia in a tense penalty shootout after a goalless draw in Rotterdam. The victory marked Spain’s first major trophy in over a decade, having lost the 2021 final to France.

Who did Portugal beat in the inaugural final?

Portugal were crowned the first-ever Nations League champions in 2019 after a 1-0 win over the Netherlands in Porto. Goncalo Guedes scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute, securing the title on home soil at Estadio do Dragao.
