London : In a major setback for Team India ahead of the decisive fifth Test against England, star wicketkeeper and vice-captain Rishabh Pant has been ruled out due to a toe fracture sustained during the fourth Test in Manchester. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development on Saturday, announcing that Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan will replace Pant in the squad.
Fracture Ends Pant’s Series Early
Pant suffered the injury while attempting a reverse sweep on Day 1 of the fourth Test. Despite returning to bat later in the match, scans confirmed a fracture in his right toe, ruling him out of the final game at The Oval, starting July 31.
A statement from the BCCI medical team said: “Rishabh Pant has sustained a fracture to his right toe. He will not be available for the fifth Test and is currently under medical supervision. The board wishes him a swift recovery.”
Jagadeesan Drafted In As Wicketkeeping Cover
With limited options in the wicketkeeping department, the selectors have turned to N Jagadeesan, who has been part of India A squads and was listed among the BCCI’s targeted players. This marks his maiden Test call-up. Known for his consistent performances in domestic cricket, Jagadeesan now steps into a high-pressure role in what could be a series-defining match.
“I’ve been preparing for this opportunity,” Jagadeesan said. “It’s an honour to be called up for the national team in the longest format. I’m looking forward to contributing wherever possible.”
Kishan Unavailable, Door Opens For Jagadeesan
Ishan Kishan, considered the most experienced backup, was unavailable due to ongoing fitness concerns. His absence paved the way for Jagadeesan’s selection, with Dhruv Jurel likely to continue behind the stumps if India opts for continuity.
Series In Balance As England Lead 2-1
The five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is finely poised, with England leading 2-1 heading into the final Test. India must win at The Oval to level the series. Pant’s absence will be felt not only in the field but also in the middle order, where his attacking strokeplay has been crucial.
