Marc Marquez of Ducati stormed to his ninth sprint victory of the season at the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday, extending his MotoGP championship lead. This dominant performance at Assen came despite two crashes in Friday’s practice sessions.

Marquez, starting fourth on the grid, finished ahead of his brother Alex Marquez of Gresini Racing, while Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi secured his first sprint podium since 2023 in third. Pole sitter Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha, unfortunately, crashed out with four laps remaining.

Championship Lead Extended and Psychological Boost

The victory significantly boosts Marc Marquez’s championship lead to 43 points over his brother Alex heading into Sunday’s main race. Notably, Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, who is third in the championship, could only manage fifth place behind VR46 Racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio. This win provides a crucial psychological boost for Marc Marquez, as he aims for his first main race victory at the “Cathedral of Speed” since 2018, especially after his challenging Friday.

Race Highlights and Key Moments

Quartararo, who had claimed his fourth pole position of the season in qualifying, initially led the pack into Turn 1. However, a blistering start from Marc Marquez saw him elbow his way close to Quartararo, with his shoulder briefly touching the Frenchman’s boot.

Despite leading for most of Lap 1, Quartararo couldn’t match the pace of the Ducati bikes. Marc Marquez eventually took the lead in the final chicane, followed by Alex Marquez and Bezzecchi, who also overtook the Yamaha rider. Meanwhile, Bagnaia, who qualified second, fell back, with fellow Italian Di Giannantonio moving past him into fifth at the halfway mark.

Marc Marquez nearly surrendered his lead due to a rare mistake, going wide and giving Alex an opportunity to pass. However, the elder Marquez quickly shut the door to maintain his lead. Quartararo, pushing hard to stay with the front group, eventually lost his balance at Turn 10 with four laps to go and crashed out of the sprint. Up front, Marc Marquez remained in complete control, taking the checkered flag with his brother Alex finishing second once again.
