India A Tighten Grip as Khaleel Ahmed Wrecks England Lions on Day 3

A dominant performance from India A saw KL Rahul score a brilliant century before Khaleel Ahmed’s incisive spell crippled England Lions’ middle order, leaving the hosts struggling at 279/8.

Key Day 3 Developments

England Lions struggle in reply to India A’s 348

Resuming at 192/3, the Lions faltered under sustained pace pressure, losing five wickets for just 87 runs by stumps.

Khaleel Ahmed’s game-changing spell

The left-arm pacer removed Jordan Cox early, then dismissed James Rew and Tom Lawes in the same over to dismantle the middle order. He later accounted for Chris Woakes, ending with 4 wickets for the day.

India A’s bowling unit operates as a cohesive force

While Khaleel led the charge, Tushar Deshpande removed Max Holden, and Nitish Reddy picked up the key wicket of Farhan Ahmed, helping India A tighten their hold.

Late resistance delays the inevitable

A brief 32-run stand between Josh Tongue and Farhan Ahmed helped the Lions avoid total collapse but did little to shift momentum.

India A lead by 69 runs with two wickets still to take

The visitors remain firmly in control and will look to wrap up the innings early on Day 4 to potentially enforce a follow-on or bat the Lions out of the game.

Deeper Insights

KL Rahul’s flawless return

His 116 was a showcase of timing and temperament, coming off 168 balls and including 15 boundaries and a six. This was his 19th first-class century—crucial preparation ahead of the senior Test series beginning June 20.

Support act from Dhruv Jurel

Jurel continued his consistent form with a composed 52, providing the foundation for India A’s total.

India A’s impressive pace depth

In addition to Khaleel and Deshpande, young pacers like Anshul Kamboj maintained pressure with disciplined spells, reflecting the bench strength of India’s fast-bowling resources.

England Lions’ fragile middle order exposed

Despite a solid top-three, the Lions’ middle and lower order offered little resistance against sustained pace, an area that might concern England selectors ahead of the senior series.

Looking Ahead to Day 4

India A are in a strong position to finish off the innings quickly and may look to either set a challenging second-innings target or press for an outright win.

England Lions’ only hope is for the tail to bat deep into the first session and avoid conceding a huge lead.

The performances in this match could influence squad selection for the main Test series, especially for players like Khaleel Ahmed and Dhruv Jurel who are pushing for senior team opportunities.

Day 3 at Northampton showcased the discipline, depth, and desire of this India A side. With KL Rahul back in form and bowlers firing in unison, the visitors are on track for a convincing result. England Lions will need something extraordinary on Day 4 to avoid defeat and salvage pride.
