Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen and Chilean PGA Tour rookie Cristobal Del Solar fired matching 9-under-par 61s to grab a share of the lead after the opening round of the RBC Canadian Open on Thursday in Caledon, Ontario.
Both players made the most of TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, which is hosting a PGA Tour event for the first time. They hold a one-stroke edge over Cameron Champ, with Jake Knapp trailing just behind in fourth place after carding a 7-under 63.
Del Solar surged ahead of Olesen with 10 birdies over his first 16 holes, flirting with a historic 59. However, a bogey on the 17th—after failing to save par from the bunker—set him back slightly. He had a chance to reclaim the solo lead at the final hole but missed a 15-foot birdie putt.
While Del Solar is already known for his record-setting 57 on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this year—the lowest round ever in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event—he said that remarkable feat wasn’t on his mind as he approached the end of Thursday’s round.
