Kerala’s first representative at the Asian Championship, Iqbal was a key figure in the state’s basketball development

Mohammed Iqbal, a former India basketball player and former Kerala captain, passed away in Kochi on Monday at the age of 74. Iqbal was the first player from Kerala to represent India at the Asian Basketball Championship, a milestone he achieved in 1971 when the tournament was held in Japan.

A native of Kottayam, Iqbal began his basketball journey through the YMCA and Baselius College, institutions that played a formative role in his development as an athlete. He went on to captain the Kerala team in 1973–74 and remained a respected figure in the state’s basketball circles long after his playing career ended.

In addition to his contributions on the court, Iqbal played a leading role in strengthening the basketball community in Kerala. He was the president of Rebound, a collective of former players established in 2016 to promote the sport and foster camaraderie among past athletes.

Key milestones in his career:

Represented India at the 1971 Asian Basketball Championship in Japan, becoming the first Keralite to do so.

Captained the Kerala state team in 1973–74.

Played a crucial role in the formation and leadership of Rebound, a players’ collective supporting basketball development.

Known for his efforts to bring former players together and advocate for the growth of the sport in Kerala.

Iqbal’s passing is a significant loss to the Indian basketball fraternity, particularly in Kerala, where his contributions continue to resonate across generations.
