Bhagwant Mann Backs Punjab’s 2030 Hockey World Cup Bid

Punjab is looking to strengthen its position as a major international hockey destination, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann asserting that the state is ready to host the 2030 Hockey World Cup.

Mann’s proposal gained momentum during the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, which marked the first time the state hosted the continental hockey tournament. The Chief Minister had earlier urged Hockey India general secretary Bhola Nath Singh to consider awarding Punjab the hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup.

The successful organisation of the Asian Champions Trophy has further strengthened the state’s ambitions. Mann described the tournament as a historic achievement and a stepping stone towards hosting bigger international sporting events.

Punjab’s Rich Hockey Legacy and Olympic Contribution

Highlighting Punjab’s contribution to Indian hockey, Mann pointed to the state’s remarkable history of producing international players and Olympic medallists.

According to the Chief Minister, Punjab has produced 77 hockey Olympians between the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. Of these, 48 players have won Olympic medals, underlining the state’s longstanding contribution to Indian hockey.

He also recalled the achievements of legendary players such as Balbir Singh Senior, Udham Singh, Prithipal Singh, Ajit Pal Singh and Surjit Singh. Among the current generation, players including Harmanpreet Singh, Manpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh continue to represent Punjab’s contribution to the sport.

Mann emphasised that hockey and Punjab share an inseparable relationship, with generations of players helping shape India’s international reputation in the game.

Sports Infrastructure Gets Major Boost in Punjab

The state government has highlighted its investment in sports infrastructure as a key part of its preparations for hosting major international competitions.

Mann said six new hockey astroturf grounds had been constructed during the government’s tenure, while work on two additional facilities was underway. The state has also established 18 six-a-side astroturf hockey grounds to encourage participation and develop talent at the grassroots level.

Additionally, the government has earmarked ₹1,744 crore exclusively for sports development, reflecting its commitment to strengthening facilities and supporting athletes.

These investments are expected to improve training opportunities, expand access to hockey and strengthen Punjab’s ability to organise international sporting events.

Asian Champions Trophy Success Strengthens World Cup Ambitions

The Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 provided an important opportunity for the state to demonstrate its organisational capabilities. The tournament featured six national teams, with league-stage matches held in Jalandhar and the knockout matches scheduled in Mohali.

India successfully defended its title by defeating Japan 4-1 in the final at the Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.

Mann congratulated the people of Punjab on the successful hosting of the tournament, describing it as a significant milestone in the state’s sporting journey. He also highlighted the potential benefits of international competitions for sports tourism, hospitality and local businesses.

With its hockey heritage, improving infrastructure and experience of hosting the continental championship, Punjab is now making a strong pitch to stage the 2030 Hockey World Cup. However, the hosting rights remain subject to the official decision by the relevant hockey authorities.
