England captain Harry Brook smashed the fastest double century in men’s One Day Internationals, scoring 202 off 116 balls against Sri Lanka in a tri-series match in Rawalpindi on Thursday. His record-breaking innings powered England to a formidable total of 429 for four, their fourth-highest score in ODI cricket.

Brook breaks ODI double-century record

Brook reached his double century in just 114 balls, surpassing India’s Shubman Gill, who had scored a double hundred in 116 balls against the West Indies at Guwahati last month. Brook’s innings ended on the final ball of England’s innings when he was caught in the deep, two deliveries after reaching the landmark.

The England captain struck 21 boundaries and 10 sixes, displaying an aggressive approach throughout his innings. He reached his first century off 75 balls before accelerating further to bring up 150 with a ramped boundary over fine leg. His double century came through a paddle sweep against Janith Liyanage in the final over.

Root, Jacks and Banton support England’s charge

Joe Root contributed 69 runs, while Will Jacks remained unbeaten on 66. Tom Banton also made a valuable contribution with a half-century, scoring 50.

Brook and Jacks added 156 runs in the final 10 overs, giving England a commanding finish after being sent in to bat.

Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage was the most effective bowler, taking two wickets for 56 runs.

Both England and Sri Lanka entered the match seeking their first victory in the tri-series after losing to Pakistan.
