India successfully defended their Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final at Nisshin, Japan, on Saturday. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma starred with the bat, helping India post 211 for 6 before the bowlers held their nerve to restrict Pakistan to 192 for 6.

Abhishek smashed 61 off just 28 balls, while Tilak produced an unbeaten 51 from 22 deliveries to give India a commanding total. Pakistan’s Hasan Nawaz fought back with a stunning 96 off 51 balls, but his efforts were not enough to prevent India from claiming the gold.

The victory also extended India’s winning run against Pakistan to 6-0 in T20 internationals since the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Abhishek Sharma Leads India’s Explosive Start

India made an aggressive start, with Abhishek taking charge during the Powerplay. The world’s top-ranked T20I batter struck seven sixes and three boundaries, reaching his half-century in just 20 deliveries.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also contributed with a quick 15 off nine balls, hitting two sixes before falling to Saim Ayub. India raced to 81 for 2 in the Powerplay, putting Pakistan’s spin-heavy attack under immediate pressure.

Pakistan left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas then helped pull things back. He dismissed the dangerous Abhishek through a stumping and later removed Ishan Kishan, who scored 20 off 18 balls.

Captain Shreyas Iyer struggled to accelerate, making 21 from 24 deliveries before falling to Abrar Ahmed. India slipped from 93 for 2 to 133 for 5, raising questions about whether they could reach the 200-run mark.

Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube Provide Late Fireworks

With India needing a strong finish, Tilak and Shivam Dube delivered at a crucial stage. The pair added 62 runs for the sixth wicket in just five overs, transforming the innings with an aggressive late assault.

Tilak remained unbeaten on 51 off 22 balls, while Dube contributed 27 from 15 deliveries. Their partnership helped India finish at 211 for 6, with the team hitting 15 sixes overall.

Pakistan struggled to contain the late surge, particularly in the final three overs. Sufyan Moqim conceded 18 runs in the 18th over, while Saim Ayub gave away 23 in the penultimate over. India added another 16 runs in the final over bowled by Ahmed Daniyal.

Hasan Nawaz’s Fighting Knock Falls Short

Pakistan’s chase suffered an early setback, but Hasan Nawaz kept his team in contention with a powerful innings. Dropped on four by Sooryavanshi, Nawaz made the most of the reprieve, smashing 96 off 51 balls to put pressure on India’s bowlers.

He punished the Indian spinners and kept Pakistan’s hopes alive despite the mounting required run rate. However, India’s experienced bowling attack prevented the chase from gaining the momentum needed to overhaul the target.

Jasprit Bumrah conceded 33 runs in his four overs, while Washington Sundar delivered a composed spell, taking two wickets for 29 runs.

Washington’s 18th over proved particularly important, as he conceded just eight runs and tightened the pressure on Pakistan during the closing stages.

India eventually restricted Pakistan to 192 for 6, sealing the gold medal and completing a memorable victory over their arch-rivals.
