IPL 2027 Auction Set To Return To India
The IPL 2027 player auction is set to return to India, with league chairman Arun Dhumal saying the BCCI is keen to host the event in the country after three consecutive editions were staged overseas.
The previous three auctions were held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Jeddah, with the latter hosting the mega auction.
Dhumal said the league has been trying to bring the auction back to India but has struggled to secure a suitable venue because of the heavy marriage season.
“Every year we try for this to happen in India, but we don’t get the venue given the heavy marriage season. So, we definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction and hopefully we will get the venue,” Dhumal told PTI.
The IPL chairman is set to be re-elected during the BCCI Annual General Meeting on September 18.
IPL Auction Venue Yet To Be Decided
While the IPL is targeting an India return for the 2027 auction, the host city has not been finalised yet.
The venue will be selected based on the availability of the BCCI’s preferred location, with the league expected to make a decision once logistical arrangements are confirmed.
The smaller scale of the IPL 2027 auction could make it easier to organise the event in India compared to the mega auction.
Impact Player Rule Under Review
The Impact Player rule also featured in discussions at a recent IPL Governing Council meeting after the BCCI sought fresh feedback from franchises on the contentious regulation.
The rule is currently scheduled to remain in place until 2027, but the BCCI is open to reviewing it based on feedback from stakeholders.
Several prominent players have previously expressed reservations about the Impact Player concept, including India ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, former captain Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel.
A major concern raised by the players is that the rule reduces the importance of genuine all-rounders by allowing teams to substitute a player during a match.
Ahead of IPL 2026, a majority of team captains had also conveyed their reservations to the BCCI, leading to renewed calls for the rule to be scrapped.
BCCI To Seek Stakeholder Feedback
Dhumal said the BCCI will consider feedback from all relevant stakeholders before deciding the future of the Impact Player rule.
“The matter is under discussion. Will take a feedback from all the stakeholders and then take a call on this,” he said.
The Impact Player rule allows teams to make a substitution at any stage of an IPL match, adding another tactical dimension to the competition.
Meanwhile, Khairul Majumdar is also set to be re-elected to the IPL Governing Council alongside Dhumal on the sidelines of the BCCI AGM this week.
