Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026: Iran Face Bahrain

Iran’s men’s basketball team has reached the knockout stage of the Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 campaign and will face Bahrain in the quarterfinals of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.

The quarterfinal clash is scheduled for Wednesday, with the winner moving into the semifinals. Iran enter the knockout stage after finishing at the top of Group B, while Bahrain advanced from Group C as runners-up behind China.

The meeting will give Iran a difficult test against a Bahrain side that has already shown it can compete with strong opposition in Nagoya.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Group Stage Ends With Top Spot

Iran finished the preliminary round at the top of Group B after collecting two victories from three matches.

Their campaign began with a 59-53 defeat against Qatar, but Iran responded strongly in their remaining matches. They defeated Chinese Taipei and then secured an 81-68 victory over Jordan in their final group game.

The victory over Jordan was particularly important because it confirmed Iran’s position at the top of the group. Iran finished with five points, ahead of Chinese Taipei on head-to-head results, while Jordan finished third and Qatar fourth.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Victory Over Jordan Builds Momentum

Iran’s final group match against Jordan produced a 13-point victory.

Jordan started better, taking the opening quarter 20-19. Iran responded by winning the second quarter 17-16, leaving the teams level at 36-36 at halftime.

Iran then took control after the interval. They won the third quarter 27-16 before adding an 18-16 advantage in the final period to complete an 81-68 victory.

Mohammad Jamshidi was Iran’s leading scorer with 30 points, playing a major role in the team’s successful finish to the group stage.

The result also meant Jordan had to wait for the completion of the other groups to determine whether it would advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Quarterfinal Brings Bahrain Challenge

Bahrain secured its place in the last eight by finishing second in Group C behind China.

The Bahrainis opened their campaign with an impressive 89-85 victory over defending champions the Philippines. They then suffered a heavy 105-59 defeat to China before completing the group stage with a 101-78 win over Kazakhstan.

That final victory over Kazakhstan confirmed Bahrain’s progression to the knockout stage.

The results underline the unpredictable nature of Bahrain’s campaign. After upsetting the defending champions, the team endured a major defeat against China before recovering strongly against Kazakhstan.

Iran therefore cannot afford to underestimate their quarterfinal opponents.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Faces Threat From JaKarr Sampson

One of Bahrain’s biggest threats is JaKarr Sampson, the American-Bahraini forward who brings size and experience to the team’s frontcourt.

The Tehran Times specifically highlighted Sampson as a major concern for Iran, particularly because of his ability to influence the game around the paint and contribute at both ends of the floor.

Sampson also produced strong numbers for Bahrain during the 2026 FIBA Asia Cup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers, averaging 17.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists across four games, according to FIBA.

His presence gives Bahrain an experienced inside option and will put additional pressure on Iran’s defensive unit.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Quarterfinal Line-Up Confirmed

The quarterfinal bracket has now been finalised.

The four matches are:

Iran vs Bahrain

Jordan vs South Korea

China vs Saudi Arabia

Chinese Taipei vs Japan

Iran will meet Bahrain on Wednesday, with the winner advancing to the semifinal stage.

The knockout format leaves little room for mistakes. Unlike the group stage, where teams had multiple opportunities to recover from a defeat, the quarterfinal is a single elimination contest.

For Iran, that makes their defensive organisation and ability to control the tempo particularly important against Bahrain’s physical approach.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Semifinal Place At Stake

Iran will now look to carry the momentum from their 81-68 win over Jordan into the knockout stage.

Their opening defeat to Qatar showed that the team can be vulnerable when its scoring rhythm drops, but the response in the following matches demonstrated their ability to recover and finish strongly.

The quarterfinal against Bahrain presents a different challenge. Bahrain have already beaten the Philippines in this tournament and possess players capable of creating problems in the paint.

Iran will therefore need another disciplined performance from its key players, with Jamshidi’s scoring ability likely to be important alongside the team’s defensive work.

Iran Basketball Asian Games 2026 Campaign Enters Decisive Stage

The quarterfinal marks the point where Iran’s Asian Games campaign moves from group-stage qualification to a direct battle for medals.

Finishing first in Group B has put Iran into a favourable position, but there is no margin for error against Bahrain. The winner will move one step closer to the Asian Games podium, while the losing side will see its men’s basketball campaign come to an end.

For Iran, the immediate objective is clear: overcome Bahrain, reach the semifinals and keep their medal ambitions alive in Nagoya.
