Avinash Sable Returns to Steeplechase Competition

Avinash Sable is set to return to the 3000m steeplechase on September 10 when he competes at the Indian Athletics Series Final in New Delhi, marking an important test ahead of the 2026 Asian Games.

The race will be Sable’s first steeplechase competition since his injury-enforced absence. The Indian distance runner has spent the past several months rebuilding his fitness after undergoing surgery for an ACL and meniscus injury.

The New Delhi race will therefore be less about chasing a particular time and more about assessing how his body responds to the demands of the event before he heads to Japan for the Asian Games.

Avinash Sable’s Road Back After Major Injury

Sable’s return comes after one of the toughest injury spells of his career.

He suffered a serious knee injury in July 2025 after a fall during the 3000m steeplechase at the Monaco Diamond League. The injury affected his ACL and meniscus and forced him to undergo surgery, ruling him out of major competitions during his rehabilitation.

The long recovery kept Sable away from competitive steeplechase for around 14 months. His comeback has involved gradually increasing his workload rather than immediately returning to full competition.

His rehabilitation has also included training on softer surfaces to reduce the load on his recovering knee. Sable has trained at locations including Ooty, the Inspire Institute of Sport in Bellary and the Sports Authority of India’s Southern Centre in Bengaluru.

Avinash Sable Tested His Fitness Over 5000m

Before returning to the steeplechase, Sable competed in a 5000m race at the IFAM Oordegem meeting in Belgium.

That race provided him with valuable competitive exposure after his lengthy absence, but the 3000m steeplechase presents a different challenge because of the barriers and water jump.

Sable’s upcoming appearance in New Delhi will therefore provide a more meaningful indication of his readiness for the Asian Games. He has been gradually building his confidence and physical condition since returning from surgery.

Avinash Sable Targets Asian Games Return

The immediate objective for Sable is to reach the Asian Games in competitive condition.

The 2026 Asian Games will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. Sable is the defending Asian Games champion in the men’s 3000m steeplechase after winning gold at the 2022 Asian Games, which were held in Hangzhou in 2023.

His experience at the continental level gives him a strong foundation, but his main challenge will be determining how close he can get to his previous level after such a lengthy interruption.

Sable’s Asian Games target is clear: he wants to retain the 3000m steeplechase gold medal he won in Hangzhou.

The Indian athlete has previously established himself as one of the country’s leading distance runners. He holds the Indian national record in the 3000m steeplechase at 8:09.91, set at the 2024 Paris Diamond League.

However, Sable has acknowledged that his comeback has been a gradual process. Rather than focusing solely on his previous personal bests, he has concentrated on rebuilding the strength and confidence required to compete again at the highest level.

Recent reports indicate that Sable remains confident about his Asian Games prospects despite the difficult road back. He has also said that his fitness has been improving steadily during training.
