Syndrela Das found the perfect way to celebrate her 17th birthday — not with a cake, but with two championship trophies.
The West Bengal paddler produced one of the most memorable performances of the UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships in Kanpur, winning the women’s singles as well as the Under-19 girls’ singles title on the same day.
What made the achievement even more impressive was the workload behind it. Das played seven matches during the day and won all seven, showing remarkable physical endurance and mental composure as she moved between the youth and senior competitions.
Senior title came after a six-game battle
The biggest test arrived in the women’s singles final, where Das faced Maharashtra’s Divyanshi Bhowmick, a familiar opponent and close friend.
Bhowmick made the stronger start, taking the opening game 11-9. Das, however, immediately changed the momentum, winning the next two games 11-8, 11-8.
The match then swung again as Bhowmick dominated the fourth game 11-5 to make it 2-2.
Das responded when it mattered most. She took the fifth game 11-7 before holding her nerve in the sixth to win 11-9 and seal the championship.
