India’s hopes of making a strong impact in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have suffered a major setback after rising star Sachin Yadav confirmed that he will miss the prestigious multi-sport event due to an elbow injury.

The 23-year-old, who emerged as one of India’s brightest athletics talents last season, has decided to undergo surgery after the injury worsened in recent months. The decision brings an early end to his Commonwealth Games campaign and puts his immediate focus on returning in time for the 2026 Asian Games.

A Promising Season Interrupted

Sachin enjoyed a breakthrough 2025 season, claiming the silver medal at the Asian Athletics Championships before producing a stunning performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where he finished fourth with a personal best throw of 86.27 metres. The effort established him as one of India’s leading javelin throwers and a genuine medal contender on the international stage.

However, his 2026 campaign never gathered momentum. The elbow problem, which first surfaced during the Indian Athletics Series-3 in New Delhi, became more severe following his appearance at the Rome Diamond League. Since then, the discomfort has affected both his training and performances.

Commonwealth Dream Ends Early

With surgery now considered the best option, Sachin has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games, ending India’s hopes of seeing one of its top javelin prospects compete at the event.

The injury also casts uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming Senior Inter-State Athletics Championships, an important qualifying competition for the Asian Games. His recovery timeline will determine whether he can return in time to secure a place in India’s squad later this year.

Although missing the Commonwealth Games is a significant disappointment, Sachin’s priority is now a complete recovery. At just 23, the talented thrower still has several major international championships ahead of him. A successful rehabilitation could allow him to regain the form that saw him throw beyond the 86-metre mark and establish himself among the world’s elite javelin athletes.

For Indian athletics, his absence leaves a noticeable gap in the men’s javelin event, with one of the country’s most promising young stars now racing against time to return stronger for future competitions.
