From World Cup Gold to Olympic Ambitions: India’s Teen Archer Kumkum Mohod Aims for the Biggest Stage

Indian archery has long searched for its next breakthrough star, and Kumkum Mohod is rapidly emerging as a strong contender for that role. The 17-year-old recurve archer from Maharashtra has captured national attention after helping India secure a memorable gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai, a result that could mark the beginning of a promising international career.

Competing alongside experienced archers Deepika Kumari and Ankita Bhakat, Kumkum was part of the Indian women’s recurve team that produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. India stunned South Korea—the most dominant nation in Olympic archery history—in the semifinals before edging past host nation China in a nail-biting final.

The gold-medal contest went down to a shoot-off after both teams were locked at 4-4. Under immense pressure, the Indian trio held their nerve to clinch a 5-4 victory, with Kumkum delivering a crucial 10-point arrow in the decisive moments. The triumph ended India’s five-year wait for a Women’s Recurve Team World Cup title and underlined the country’s growing strength in the discipline.

What makes Kumkum’s achievement even more remarkable is the speed of her rise. Still in her teenage years, she has already established herself among India’s elite archers and recently secured selection for the 2026 Asian Games squad. Her performances during the national trials demonstrated that she can compete with and outperform some of the country’s most accomplished names.

Away from the range, Kumkum follows a disciplined lifestyle focused on mental preparation and self-improvement. Reading, meditation, yoga and maintaining a personal diary have become important parts of her routine, helping her stay composed during high-pressure competitions. That calm mindset was clearly visible during India’s dramatic run to gold in Shanghai.

The World Cup success has strengthened Kumkum’s confidence, but her ambitions extend far beyond one tournament. The young archer has set her sights on winning individual medals on the world stage, contributing to India’s Asian Games campaign and ultimately reaching the Olympic podium.

For Indian archery, Kumkum Mohod represents a new generation of talent—fearless, focused and capable of delivering on the biggest stages. If her recent performances are any indication, the journey from World Cup champion to Olympic contender may only just be beginning.
