Star Indian badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has responded firmly to the heavy trolling he faced after his recent comments about the lack of recognition for badminton in India. The former world number one men’s doubles player emphasised that his words were not about seeking personal attention but about building a true sporting culture in the country.
Original Comments Spark Backlash
Satwiksairaj, along with his long-time partner Chirag Shetty, had expressed disappointment following India’s bronze medal at the 2026 BWF Thomas Cup. He remarked that the general public shows little interest in badminton and remains occupied with IPL, politics, and other events. The comments drew significant criticism on social media, with many trolls targeting the players for “complaining” despite winning a medal.
Satwiksairaj’s Statement on X
In a detailed clarification posted on X (formerly Twitter), Satwiksairaj wrote:
“The last few days have brought a lot of attention to my recent comments regarding the lack of reception for our Thomas Cup bronze medal. While I am grateful for all the overwhelming support and encouragement, I want to clarify my intent… My words did not come from a place of wanting personal fame or taking credit away from anyone else’s achievements. I have the utmost respect for every athlete who brings glory to India, regardless of the sport.”
He further added:
“My message was simple: we need to foster a culture that encourages and celebrates every win, big or small… Let’s come together to support all sports with the same passion… Next time, let it not be about who won more or less, but about celebrating everyone who wears the India jersey.”
Background and Achievements
Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty were once the top-ranked men’s doubles pair in the world. Satwiksairaj played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup gold in 2022 and was instrumental in the team’s bronze medal win at the recent edition.
