Tumkur, Karnataka :The opening day of the National Junior U-20 Athletics Championships witnessed electrifying sprints and record-breaking performances that have put India’s next generation of track stars under the spotlight. In a highly competitive field, two standout sprinters — Abhay Singh and Nipam — dominated the blue riband 100m events, smashing long-standing marks and breaching Asian Junior Championship qualification standards.

Men’s 100m: Abhay Singh Rewrites Meet History

Winner: Abhay Singh (Reliance)

Performance: 10.41 seconds (Meet Record & Asian U-20 Qualifier)

Asian U-20 Standard: 10.46 seconds

In a scintillating display of raw speed, Abhay Singh etched his name into the Championships’ history books with a finishing time of 10.41s in the men’s 100m final, eclipsing the previous meet record of 10.47s set in 2018. This performance also comfortably surpassed the Asian U-20 qualification mark of 10.46s — signaling his readiness for the continental stage.

Second place in this event went to Yuvraj Singh Chib (Jammu & Kashmir) with 10.52s, followed closely by Anshu Rajak (Uttar Pradesh) also clocking 10.52s.

Women’s 100m: Nipam’s Record-Breaking Dash

Winner: Nipam (Uttar Pradesh)

Performance: 11.53 seconds (New National U-20 Record & Asian U-20 Qualifier)

Previous Record: 11.54 seconds

In the women’s equivalent, Nipam delivered a career-best sprint, winning gold in 11.53s — a performance that not only smashed the existing junior national record (11.54s) but also bettered the Asian U-20 qualifying mark of 11.79s. Her dominant run also rewrote the meet record previously held since 2014.

Behind her, Bhavana G (Tamil Nadu) clocked 11.87s, while Kajal Hirabhai Vaja (Gujarat) finished in 11.88s.

Rising Stars Beyond the Sprints

While the 100m headlines grabbed most attention, several other juniors also breached Asian qualifying thresholds:

Amanat Kamboj (Punjab): Clinched the discus throw title with a distance of 52.27m, comfortably above the Asian U-20 mark of 50.13m.

Muskan (Haryana): Won the women’s 5000m in 16:42.88s, better than the qualification time of 16:52.54s.

B Sowndharya (Tamil Nadu): Matched the pole vault Asian U-20 qualifying height of 3.60m.

Mohammed Ashfaq (Kerala): Posted a 47.39s in the men’s 400m heats, bettering the Asian qualification standard.

What This Means for Future Championships

With multiple athletes exceeding the Asian Junior qualification marks early in the tournament, India appears poised to send a strong contingent to the Asian U-20 Athletics Championships later this year. Performances in Tumkur not only highlight national dominance in junior categories but also provide crucial momentum for selections ahead of international meets.

It was a compelling start to the championships — one that showcased not just speed and strength, but a new generation ready to challenge records at the continental level.
