England’s new head coach Brian McDermott has opened the door for Jake Connor to return to the national squad ahead of this autumn’s Rugby League World Cup.

McDermott, appointed on Thursday, described the Leeds Rhinos half-back as a “game-breaker” and confirmed he is firmly in contention for selection despite missing last year’s Ashes series.

Connor back in contention

Connor, 31, was left out of Shaun Wane’s squad for the Ashes defeat to Australia, with the former coach citing form as the key reason behind his omission.

However, McDermott dismissed the criticism surrounding Connor and backed his ability, saying the narrative around the player had been unfair.

He insisted that while opinions may differ on Connor’s personality, his quality on the field is unquestionable and makes him a strong option for England’s World Cup campaign.

McDermott outlines approach

The 56-year-old, who replaces Wane on a short-term deal until the end of the tournament, emphasised his focus will be on performance rather than reputation.

Currently working with the Gold Coast Titans, McDermott will take on the England role part-time but has expressed interest in continuing beyond the World Cup.

His appointment follows a successful coaching career that includes multiple Super League titles with Leeds Rhinos.

World Cup challenge ahead

England will begin their World Cup campaign against Tonga in Perth on 17 October, before facing France and Papua New Guinea in the group stage.

With limited preparation time, McDermott’s task will be to quickly assemble a competitive squad capable of challenging the traditional dominance of Australia in the tournament.

Connor’s potential return could add creativity and attacking spark as England aim to make a strong impact on the global stage.
