Indian Super League side Punjab FC will look to register consecutive victories when it faces NorthEast United FC in their upcoming 2025-26 encounter, hoping to build momentum early in the campaign.
Punjab heads into the match with renewed confidence after a clinical 2-0 win over Bengaluru FC, where striker Effiong Nsungusi scored twice to secure the club’s first victory of the season. The Nigerian forward struck in the 23rd and 33rd minutes, finishing a well-worked cross from Manglenthang Kipgen before adding a second with a composed effort from the edge of the box.
Punjab coach Panagiotis Dilmperis praised the disciplined performance after the win, saying the team showed “resilience and organisation” to absorb pressure and strike decisively on the counter.
NorthEast looking for a turnaround
NorthEast United, meanwhile, will be eager to rediscover form after inconsistent results. The Highlanders still possess attacking threats in players such as Alaaeddine Ajaraie and Jithin MS, who have been key contributors in recent matches.
Previous meetings between the two sides have often been closely fought. In one such encounter last season, NorthEast took the lead through Ajaraie in the 24th minute, before Khaiminthang Lhungdim equalised late in the 82nd minute to earn Punjab a 1-1 draw.
Stakes for both teams
For Punjab FC, another victory would strengthen their push up the table and underline the impact of Nsungusi’s attacking form. For NorthEast United, the clash offers a chance to steady their campaign and convert promising performances into points.
With both teams possessing dangerous forwards and recent encounters producing tight scorelines, the upcoming ISL clash promises to be a competitive battle as Punjab aims to continue its winning run while NorthEast searches for a crucial turnaround.
