Max Verstappen topped the timesheets on the opening morning of Formula 1’s Bahrain pre-season test, setting the early pace as teams began preparations for the new season. The Red Bull driver clocked the fastest lap on medium tyres, edging out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in a closely contested session.

Early Pace and Lap Times
Verstappen posted a best time of 1 minute 35.433 seconds, finishing 0.169 seconds ahead of Piastri, who ran on soft tyres. Mercedes’ George Russell ended the session third, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton followed in fourth. However, teams remain cautious about reading too much into lap times, as fuel loads and car setups are not made public during testing.

Impact of New Regulations
This season marks the biggest technical reset in Formula 1 history, with new rules covering chassis, power units, tyres, and fuel. As a result, early testing data is considered less reliable than usual. Teams are still exploring how best to adapt their cars to the updated regulations.

Focus on Energy Management
Energy usage and hybrid system management have emerged as key areas of focus. Drivers and engineers are working to balance electrical deployment and recovery to maximise lap time, making these sessions crucial for long-term performance planning.

Midfield and Backmarker Performances
Williams showed steady progress, with Carlos Sainz placing seventh after the team’s delayed pre-season programme. He finished behind Esteban Ocon’s Haas and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad. Aston Martin, running its first Adrian Newey-designed car, struggled for pace, with Lance Stroll over four seconds off the fastest time.

Session Structure and Next Runs
Each team fielded one driver in the morning session, with the second driver taking over in the afternoon. World champion Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were among those scheduled to drive later in the day as testing continued.

The Bahrain test will run until Friday, giving teams valuable time to fine-tune their cars ahead of the season-opening race next month.
