Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina have created history by becoming the first mothers to be ranked inside the world’s top 10 at the same time in women’s tennis.
Bencic has climbed to ninth in the latest WTA rankings, while Svitolina now sits at number 10 after her strong Australian Open performance.
Their achievement highlights an inspiring comeback after maternity breaks.
Bencic’s Remarkable Return After Motherhood
The Swiss star gave birth to her daughter Bella in April 2024 and returned to professional tennis after an 11-month break.
Despite the long absence, Bencic worked hard to regain form and consistency on tour.
She said she is “incredibly proud” of competing again at the highest level after such a challenging journey.
Svitolina’s Strong Comeback and Resilience
Elina Svitolina welcomed her daughter Skai in October 2022 and gradually rebuilt her career.
Her semi-final run at the Australian Open helped her move back into the top 10 rankings.
The former world number three credited her fighting spirit and fan support for her successful return.
WTA Support for New Mothers
Under WTA rules, returning mothers can use their protected ranking to enter 12 tournaments within three years of childbirth.
Last year, the WTA also introduced protection for players who freeze eggs or embryos.
These policies have helped players balance family life with professional careers.
