Novak Djokovic’s bid for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title stayed alive after he reached the Australian Open semi-finals when Lorenzo Musetti retired injured.

Early struggle for Djokovic
Djokovic looked far from his best in front of a shocked crowd as Musetti dominated the opening sets. The Italian won 6-4, 6-3 and appeared in full control before suffering a thigh injury early in the third set.

The fifth seed took a medical timeout but was unable to move freely. He eventually retired at 3-1 down, ending his impressive run.

Musetti heartbreak at Melbourne Park
A visibly emotional Musetti was helped off the court by his team after the match. The 23-year-old later admitted he had been feeling discomfort from the second set.

“I honestly have no words to describe how I’m feeling,” Musetti said. “The pain kept increasing and I couldn’t continue.”

Djokovic shows sportsmanship
Djokovic praised his opponent and admitted he was fortunate to progress.

“He was a far better player. I was on my way home,” Djokovic said. “I feel really sorry for him and wish him a speedy recovery.”

The Serbian also received treatment for blisters on his feet and struggled with consistency, hitting 18 unforced errors in the first set alone.

Physical concerns remain for Djokovic
The 38-year-old has benefited from injury withdrawals in recent rounds, including Jakub Mensik in the fourth round. He has not won a set since his third-round victory on 24 January.

With fitness still a concern, Djokovic knows he must improve quickly.

Tough semi-final challenge ahead
Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals on Friday. The two-time defending champion has won six of their last seven meetings.

Sinner reached the last four after beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and remains one of the tournament favourites.
