Manchester United are keen to reopen contract negotiations with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as they look to secure the future of one of their most promising academy graduates.

The 20-year-old is currently under contract until 2027, with the option of a further one-year extension. Club officials are understood to be eager to bring his deal in line with other senior squad members, but discussions have yet to begin.

Mainoo’s situation remains delicate, especially after a challenging start to the season.

Uncertain Future After Limited Game Time

Mainoo has not started a Premier League match this season and struggled for regular opportunities under former manager Ruben Amorim.

He was keen to leave on loan last summer to gain first-team experience and was again hopeful of a temporary move during the current transfer window.

“There have been moments when he felt uncertain about his role,” a source close to the player said.

The lack of consistent involvement raised questions within Mainoo’s camp about how highly he was valued at Old Trafford.

Return To First-Team Plans

Since Amorim’s departure, Mainoo has been brought back into the senior setup.

Interim manager Darren Fletcher handed him a start in the FA Cup third-round defeat to Brighton, and he retained his place under Michael Carrick in last weekend’s derby win over Manchester City.

“He has shown great maturity and professionalism,” Fletcher said. “Kobbie is responding well to the opportunities.”

The recent run of games has helped restore confidence in his standing within the squad.

Contract Talks Back On Agenda

Mainoo signed a long-term contract in 2023, and United had expected to agree improved terms after his standout role in the 2024 FA Cup final win over City.

He also enhanced his reputation by starting in England’s Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain.

However, no agreement was reached at the time, and negotiations were put on hold.

“We want to reward players who contribute and grow with us,” a club insider said. “Kobbie fits that profile.”

Balancing Ambition And Stability

While United are keen to secure Mainoo’s long-term future, it remains unclear how open the midfielder will be to signing a new deal.

His desire for regular football and development opportunities remains central to any decision.

If talks progress positively, United hope to convince him that his future lies at Old Trafford. Otherwise, interest from other clubs could grow as his contract situation evolves.

For now, both player and club appear focused on rebuilding trust and finding common ground in the months ahead.
