Indore: In a high-stakes series decider at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, India found themselves chasing a daunting 338 set by New Zealand in the 3rd ODI of the series — a target that had fans on the edge of their seats from the first over.

Mitchell & Phillips Torch NZ to a Big Total

New Zealand’s batsmen dominated the Indian bowling attack, with Daryl Mitchell smashing his second consecutive century of the series (137 off 131) and Glenn Phillips not far behind with a superb 106. Their massive partnership of 219 runs for the fourth wicket propelled the Kiwis to 337/8 in 50 overs, leaving India with a tough chase in front of a packed Indore crowd.

Early Struggles for India

India won the toss and chose to field, but their top order collapsed early. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were back in the pavilion quickly, and at one stage India were 71/4 — a position that put immediate pressure on the hosts.

Kohli & Reddy Revive the Chase

Just when it looked like New Zealand might run away with the contest, Virat Kohli and Nitish Kumar Reddy stitched together a crucial partnership to steady India’s innings. Kohli reached yet another fifty, showcasing his trademark timing and composure, while Reddy also scored a fighting 53 before being dismissed by Kristian Clarke.

Kohli later admitted to reporters, “The pitch was demanding, but we believed we could chase anything on this ground. Nitish gave us the momentum we desperately needed.”

Match Situation Now

At the time of writing, India have lost five wickets but still have Kohli at the crease, with plenty of overs remaining in this daunting run chase. The required run rate remains steep, but the experienced campaigner in Kohli gives the hosts a glimmer of hope.

Key Points to Watch

India’s middle order must now step up quickly if they’re to win a match that could define the series.

New Zealand’s bowlers have stuck to their plans well, but if India can keep the scoreboard moving, a late twist isn’t impossible.

The Holkar pitch, known for stroke play, might still offer something for batters if Kohli and company can navigate the next phase.
