Senegal Edge Mali to Become First AFCON 2025 Semi-Finalists

Senegal became the first team to reach the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 after edging past Mali 1–0 in a fiercely contested West African quarter-final in Tangier.

First-Half Breakthrough

The breakthrough came in the first half, when Iliman Ndiaye opened the scoring with a composed right-footed finish from close range, sending the ball into the centre of the goal to give the Teranga Lions an early advantage in the opening quarter-final of the tournament.

Turning Point: Red Card for Bissouma

The match took a dramatic turn soon after when Mali captain Yves Bissouma was sent off following a heavy challenge that briefly sparked tempers on the pitch. The referee intervened swiftly, issuing a second yellow card and reducing Mali to ten men for the remainder of the contest.

Mali Fight Back, Senegal Hold Firm

Despite being a man down, Mali showed admirable resilience after the break and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. They tested Senegal’s resolve with periods of pressure, but the champions’ defensive organisation, composure and game management proved decisive.

Senegal remained disciplined at the back, limited Mali’s clear-cut chances and controlled the tempo in key moments to protect their narrow advantage.

Champions March On

The final whistle confirmed another statement performance from Senegal, who extended their unbeaten run at AFCON 2025 and moved one step closer to successfully defending their continental crown.

Mali exit the tournament with pride after a spirited campaign that once again highlighted their competitiveness at the highest level.
Senegal now advance to the semi-finals, becoming the first nation to do so at AFCON 2025, with belief growing as the tournament enters its decisive phase.

They will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Egypt and Ivory Coast.
