The NBA and FIBA have taken a significant step toward reshaping European club basketball, moving closer to the launch of a new pan-European men’s professional league that could change how the sport is structured across the continent.

According to a report by The Times of India, the NBA and world basketball’s governing body, FIBA, have confirmed that they will begin engaging potential teams and ownership groups from January as part of the next phase of planning for the proposed competition. (Source: The Times of India)

A League Built on Merit and Stability

One of the most striking features of the proposed league is its merit-based entry system, a concept designed to align with Europe’s traditional sporting model. While some clubs would hold permanent franchise spots, others would have the opportunity to qualify annually through FIBA-affiliated national leagues or competitions such as the Basketball Champions League, as reported by The Times of India.

This hybrid format aims to balance commercial stability with sporting fairness, offering ambitious clubs a clear pathway to compete at the highest level of European basketball.

Respecting Domestic and International Calendars

The NBA and FIBA have also indicated that the league would be scheduled in coordination with domestic leagues and international windows, ensuring players remain available for national team duties. This, FIBA officials believe, will help protect the wider basketball ecosystem in Europe. (Source: The Times of India)

Leaders Speak

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described the project as a major opportunity, stating that discussions have highlighted “the enormous potential for a new league in Europe,” as quoted by international media and referenced in The Times of India report.

FIBA officials echoed that view, emphasizing that the league would support not only elite competition but also long-term development, including youth programs, coaching education and referee training across Europe. (Source: The Times of India

While no official launch date has been confirmed, the growing collaboration between the NBA and FIBA suggests momentum is building toward one of the most ambitious projects in global basketball. If successful, the league could redefine European club competition and mark a new chapter in the sport’s international growth.
