Hodge Century Puts West Indies in Control as Draw Looms

West Indies dominated the third day of the Test, finishing strongly at 381 for 6, with Kavem Hodge unbeaten on 109, to consolidate their position and firmly avoid the follow-on.

Resuming the day with cautious optimism, the Caribbean side built on the platform laid on Day 2. Although New Zealand struck early in the morning session, West Indies responded with composure and resolve, gradually tightening their grip on the contest.

Early breakthroughs, steady recovery

New Zealand found some joy through Jacob Duffy, who broke the opening stand by dismissing John Campbell and Brandon King. With Shai Hope sidelined due to illness, Tevin Imlach was promoted up the order and played a stabilising role alongside Hodge. While wickets fell at regular intervals, Hodge remained unflustered, anchoring the innings with maturity and purpose.

By lunch, West Indies had moved to 206/2, setting the tone for a productive day.

The afternoon session saw West Indies consolidate further, progressing from 206/2 at lunch to 310/4 by Tea. Hodge brought up his half-century early in the session, while Athanaze provided fluent support with a brisk 45. After Athanaze’s dismissal, Justin Greaves chipped in with valuable runs, ensuring momentum was maintained.

New Zealand briefly sensed an opening when Daryl Mitchell claimed a breakthrough, but Hodge stood tall, handling the short-ball tactics with assurance.

Century stand of resolve

As the day wore on, Hodge showcased both discipline and shot selection, reaching a well-crafted century that underlined his growing stature in Test cricket. His partnership with Anderson Phillip proved crucial in seeing out the final session, frustrating the New Zealand bowlers and steering West Indies to stumps with confidence.
At the close of play, New Zealand players gathered near the crease for discussions, knowing the game had drifted away from them.

Looking ahead

With four wickets in hand and Hodge well set, West Indies will head into Day 4 as the happier side. While they may look to play with more intent if a result is to be forced, a draw appears the most likely outcome at this stage.
Play resumes at 3:30 am IST (10:00 pm GMT, previous day), with build-up coverage beginning an hour earlier.

Earlier in the match, New Zealand piled up a massive 575 in their first innings, laying a strong foundation for the Test. The total was built around a magnificent double century from Devon Conway, who anchored the innings with supreme control and patience. The hosts were further strengthened by a captain’s knock from Tom Latham, as the top order capitalised on favourable batting conditions to put West Indies under sustained pressure.
