Latham–Conway Dominate as New Zealand Crush West Indies on Day One of Third Test

New Zealand’s openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway put on a batting masterclass, leaving West Indies chasing shadows on the opening day of the third Test at Bay Oval, New Zealand on Thursday.

The Kiwi pair blasted their way to a massive 323-run opening stand, riding the weak balls and respecting the deliveries that threatened their stumps. Their rock-solid defense and punishing strokeplay frustrated the visitors, who struggled to make any impact. The home side finished Day One at 334/1, completely dominating the proceedings.

Kemar Roach was the lone bright spot for the West Indies, breaking the marathon opening partnership by dismissing Latham for 137 with a sharp catch by Roston Chase. Jayden Seales showed flashes of promise, while Anderson Phillip faltered at crucial moments. Justin Greaves and Roston Chase tried to trouble the batters, but the disciplined Kiwi duo proved too strong for the Windies’ attack.

Conway, unbeaten on 178, continued to anchor the innings, with nightwatchman Jacob Duffy contributing 9 not out to shield his partner as stumps approached. The openers were a treat for fans, combining elegance with ruthless aggression, and capitalizing on every loose delivery.

The first day clearly belonged to New Zealand, who blazed through the innings with authority. West Indies must now conjure a miracle with the ball and then with the bat if they are to salvage this match.

Scorecard – Day One:

New Zealand 1st Innings: 334/1

Tom Latham – 137

Devon Conway – 178*

Jacob Duffy – 9*

Fall of Wicket: T Latham – 137

West Indies Bowling: Kemar Roach – 1/63

Series Status: New Zealand lead 1–0 (1st Test: Draw, 2nd Test: NZ won by 9 wickets)
