Australia Crushes England in Second Ashes Test, Takes Dominating 2-0 Series Lead

Australia delivered a clinical performance to defeat England by eight wickets at the Gabba, concluding the Second Ashes Test on Day 4 and establishing a formidable 2-0 lead in the series.

The hosts needed only 65 runs for victory after their bowling attack quickly wrapped up England’s second innings earlier in the day. The result puts immense pressure on England, who must now win the remaining three Tests to regain the coveted urn.

Neser Sparks the Collapse

England began the day with a flicker of hope, with captain Ben Stokes and Will Jacks displaying admirable resilience to bat through the entire morning session. However, the introduction of local favorite Michael Neser after the interval proved to be the turning point. Neser tore through the middle and lower order, claiming his maiden Test five-wicket haul (5-48). The quick dismissals of Jacks and Stokes initiated a final, swift collapse that saw England bowled out for 241.

Starc the Match Winner

Mitchell Starc was rightfully recognized as the Player of the Match, not just for his excellent bowling (a match haul of 8 wickets) but crucially for his match-defining first-innings contribution of 77 runs. His partnership with the tailenders stretched Australia’s lead from a competitive one to a near-unassailable 177, a tactical move lauded by the Australian camp for forcing England to bat under the more challenging evening lights.

Stand-in captain Steve Smith was full of praise for the lower order, stating they gave the bowlers “the chance to bowl under lights,” which ultimately secured the dominant position.

Smith Finishes in Style

Chasing the small target, Australia lost two quick wickets, but Smith strode out to hit a rapid 23 off just 9 balls, sealing the victory with a flourish.

For England, Captain Stokes admitted the loss was disappointing, highlighting their failure to handle “pressure moments” throughout both Tests. Despite the setback, he maintained full belief in his squad’s ability to fight back in the remaining matches.

The series now moves to the Adelaide Oval for the Third Test, scheduled to begin on December 17th, where Australia will welcome back regular captain Pat Cummins.
