Premier League: Arsenal extend lead to five points; Chelsea shocked by Leeds, Liverpool held

Premier League Round-Up Report

Arsenal restore five-point lead as Chelsea shocked by Leeds

Arsenal strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League with a hard-earned 2-0 win over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal strengthened their grip at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Brentford in a late-night kick-off at the Emirates Stadium, held at 1:00 AM IST on Thursday, restoring a five-point cushion and edging closer to a first league title since 2003/04.

Mikel Arteta’s men were not at their fluent best, but midfield talisman Mikel Merino continued his impressive goal-scoring form, rising to meet Ben White’s inch-perfect cross to net his 11th goal of the season. Arteta praised the Spaniard’s decisive contribution, saying:
“It’s unbelievable what he has done again today… The movement, the quality, the finish — it’s phenomenal.”

Bukayo Saka, coming on as a second-half substitute, sealed the win deep in stoppage time with a fierce drive past Caoimhin Kelleher, reinforcing Arsenal’s determination to stay in command at the summit.

At Elland Road, Leeds United delivered the shock of the night, defeating a struggling Chelsea side 3-1 to climb out of the relegation zone and intensify pressure on manager Enzo Maresca.Chelsea’s fixture kicked off at 1:45 AM IST on Thursday,

Goals from Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka put Leeds ahead, while Pedro Neto briefly revived Chelsea hopes before Dominic Calvert-Lewin capitalised on a defensive error to seal the result.

Goals from Jaka Bijol and a stunning strike by Ao Tanaka sent Leeds two ahead before halftime. Pedro Neto briefly rekindled hope for the Blues early in the second period, but a catastrophic defensive lapse allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to pounce and secure the victory.

Maresca admitted his side were second-best throughout, saying:
“A very poor night… They deserved to win. They were better than us in all aspects.”

Liverpool drop points again at Anfield in 1-1 draw with Sunderland

Liverpool held again as frustrations grow

Liverpool’s stuttering campaign continued as they were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Chemsdine Talbi punished a mistake from Virgil van Dijk, giving the visitors a surprise lead before a late Florian Wirtz attempt deflected off Nordi Mukiele for an equaliser.

Sunderland nearly grabbed a sensational winner, but Federico Chiesa made a dramatic goal-line clearance in stoppage time. Arne Slot’s side stay eighth, far off the pace in the race for Europe.

Villa complete dramatic 4-3 comeback at Brighton

The thriller of the evening came at the Amex Stadium, where Aston Villa overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat Brighton 4-3, inspired by a brace from Ollie Watkins. The victory keeps Villa’s remarkable rise on track, further strengthening their push for a Champions League place.

Wins for Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace compounded the struggles of fellow relegation battlers Wolves and Burnley, deepening the fight for survival.
