Esipenko Strikes Back to Lead in Candidates-Berth Showdown

Esipenko Strikes Back to Lead in Candidates-Berth Showdown

Goa, India: In a dramatic turn of events at the 2025 FIDE World Cup, Grandmaster Andrey Esipenko made a powerful recovery in Game 1 of the third-place match, defeating Nodirbek Yakubboev and putting himself firmly in the driver’s seat for a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

Esipenko Bounces Back After Blunder

After a heartbreaking blunder in his semifinal, Esipenko came into the third-place match determined. He managed to build sustained pressure, and Yakubboev, under time trouble, was unable to defend accurately. By move 38, Esipenko forced a resignation, winning the game convincingly.

Final Match Opens Cautiously

Meanwhile, in the title match, GM Wei Yi held GM Javokhir Sindarov to a draw with the black pieces. Wei opted for the solid Petroff Defense, steering the game into a balanced endgame. The right to claim the World Cup title remains very much up in the air, with plenty left to play for.

What’s at Stake

Esipenko’s victory sets up a high-pressure Game 2 on Tuesday, November 25 (3 p.m. IST). All he needs is a draw to clinch third place — and with it, the final qualifying spot for the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Yakubboev, on the other hand, faces a must-win situation to stay in the race.

In the final, Sindarov and Wei Yi will also return for Game 2, each vying for the coveted World Cup title and its prestige.

Emotional Resonance and Tournament Context

The tension is palpable: for Esipenko, this is redemption — a chance to overcome his recent mistake and secure a berth in the elite Candidates field. The arrival of the Vishwanathan Anand Trophy, newly displayed on stage for the final, added symbolic weight to the moment, underlining the significance of what’s at stake.

What’s Next

Game 2 (Third‐Place Match): Nov 25, Esipenko needs just a draw to seal his Candidates spot.

Game 2 (Final): Sindarov vs. Wei Yi also resumes Nov 25, with the World Cup title still undecided.
